School bus drivers, children must observe safety rules | THE DAILY HERALD

POND ISLAND–All school bus drivers and children using the buses are reminded not to stand in the bus when it is in motion. The Inspectorate of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transportation and Telecommunication School Bus Section said the safety of all children is paramount.

All children on the bus must remain seated and facing forward at all times. School bus drivers are prohibited from transporting people other than schoolchildren during school hours and while children are on board.

Drivers must wear closed shoes, must be properly and fully dressed while operating the school bus and must exhibit good personal hygiene at all times.

Electronic distractions like headphones and hands-free headsets should not be operated while driving the bus. This practice has been observed in some drivers in the past and will be not tolerated, said the Inspection Department.

School bus drivers are strongly advised by the Inspection Department to obey the rules of the road, in particular speed limits. Violators will be dealt with from a criminal as well as administrative standpoint.

Schoolchildren and bus drivers are expected to cooperate fully and immediately with the instructions of the School Bus Controller and any other law enforcement officer, said the Inspection Department.
