School Ombudsman Project to end with info session at USM   | THE DAILY HERALD

PHILIPSBURG–The curtains will close on the first-ever school ombudsman project with an information evening at University of St. Martin (USM), from 7:00 to 9:15pm December 5, and the public is invited to attend this culmination of the project.

The Bureau of the Ombudsman embarked in May on its “Best School Ombudsman” project targeting academic high schools. The initiative involved students in the pre-exam and exam classes at Milton Peters College (HAVO/VWO), St. Dominic High School, Methodist Agogic Centre Comprehensive Secondary Education (MAC-CSE) and St. Maarten Academy’s academic section, portraying the role of an Ombudsman. The goal of the project is to promote awareness of the Ombudsman’s role.

Students selected by their respective schools went through several training sessions during May and June to prepare them for their role. From August to November, students conducted consultation sessions at their respective schools which were open to students, teachers and parents of each participating school. While students were able to accept concerns, the actual complaints have been referred to the Ombudsman Bureau.

The bureau said in a press release over the weekend that it is pleased with the enthusiasm and cooperation of schools and students that participated in the initiative.

The project will culminate with presentations given by the students at the information session at USM on December 5. The public is invited to attend the event.

“The Bureau Ombudsman wishes all participating students and schools much success as they prepare for their presentations on their role as School Ombudsmen, and expresses many thanks to the management of the schools for their support of the project,” it was stated in the release.
