PHILIPSBURG–Schools across the country will be closed on Tuesday, September 24, due to rainfall expected as a result of tropical depression Karen.
In a letter to school boards on Monday, Education Minister Wycliffe Smith said: “As you are aware, Tropical Storm Karen has been downgraded to a Tropical Depression and is moving across the Caribbean Sea today (Monday) and the days to come. According to the Meteorological Department, this depression is expected to produce rainfall accumulation of 1 to 4 inches on Sint Maarten starting tonight (Monday night) into tomorrow, Tuesday, September 24, with intervals.”
Smith said the MET Office informed him that there is a risk of heavy rains and gusts in the early morning hours and in the early afternoon. As both periods coincide with the regular hours of commute as it relates to school, Smith has decided to close all schools today Tuesday, September 24, as a precautionary measure.
Smith said he looks forward to all schools resuming regular operations on Wednesday, September 25.
