EUSTATIUS–The St. Eustatius Fire Department held an open house Friday at the fire station in Concordia. The Fire Departments of Bonaire, Statia and Saba are currently holding a recruitment drive to encourage more men, and especially women, to join their ranks.

The open house attracted some 30 visitors from Bethel Methodist, NuStar and Gwendoline van Putten School, and students from the Second Chance Education.

Persons in other age groups also stopped by throughout the morning hours by the open house, Deputy Government Commissioner Mervyn Stegers among them.

The Fire Department had set up an exhibition in the parking area which showcased several different fireman’s suits offering protection against fire, chemicals and bees, as well as different types of equipment, such as rope-rescue material, breathing apparatus, radio-communication, an infrared camera, a chainsaw and meters.

Fire Chief Andre Bennett said the open house was well-attended and the Fire Department achieved its objective by sharing information with the public.

“In addition to the information and introduction tent, we also enabled each guest in groups no larger than four to get an in-depth tour of the facility, our tools, machinery and bunker gears,” Bennett said. The older group of visitors attended a brief presentation on fire prevention presented by the fire chief himself.

“I would like to extend a sincere word of gratitude to each and every individual that attended our open house. We also anticipate in this recruitment campaign that we would receive applications from persons wishing to join our department,” Bennett said. The recruitment drive is set to end on Friday, November 30.
