PHILIPSBURG–The country’s second ombudsman, Gwendolien E. Mossel, took the oath of office before Parliament Chairwoman Sarah Wescot-Williams on Friday.
Mossel will officially assume her post as of January 1, 2019. She succeeds current Ombudsman Nilda Arduin, who demits office with an honourable discharge on December 31.
Mossel is appointed for seven years as per the law regulating the office of the ombudsman. She was unanimously approved for the post by Parliament on November 7. The duties of the Ombudsman include investigating, on request or of her own accord, actions taken by government or its entities.
Mossel’s oath-taking in Parliament House on Wilhelminastraat was witnessed by the Council of Advice vice-chairwoman, Ombudsman Bureau staff, her family and friends.
The Ombudsman, who forms part of the three high councils of state, is the only one to take the oath of office before the head of Parliament. The heads of the Council of Advice and General Audit Chamber take the oath before the governor.
