- EUSTATIUS–The second phase of the “Island to Island” cultural exchange programme began in Statia on Tuesday, November 12, when Sue-Cayli “Princess Galloway” Roosberg arrived on the island along with her chaperones.
Galloway is the daughter of Aruba soca artist Carl “Galloway Jr.” Roosberg. The ultimate goal of the project is to share and exchange the cultures of St. Eustatius and the culture of Aruba considering both islands share a capital with the same name – Oranjestad – and because of this rare shared feature, Statia student Mia Jenna “MJ” Courtar and Princess Galloway created a song entitled “Oranjestad: Island to the island.”
Princess Galloway and MJ are expected to play a prominent role during the Statia Day week of activities Youth Night, which will take place tonight Wednesday, November 13, starting at 7:00pm. The event will take place in the heart of town at the Statia Day stage. The theme of the night is “Love and Unity” and is being presented by the Feel the Vibe and the MYF organisations. There will also be performances by the Dancing Pearls, Simon Doncker Club, Master Ishn, MYF Kids, Diker Sports Training Academy and special guest Elona from St. Maarten.
Courtar and Galloway are also expected to perform during Statia Day 2019 programme on Saturday, November 16, which is scheduled to be held at the St. Eustatius Historical Foundation Simon Doncker Museum.
A youth event will also be held today in honour of the Statia Day celebrations. The Golden Rock Roman Catholic School is expected to march through the streets for a Statia folkloric celebration parade. Participants will be dressed in cultural wear or colours representing the Statia flag. The parade is expected to start at 8:30am at the Golden Rock School. Marlon “Dj Runn Things” Hook will provide the music and members of the Korps Police Caribbean Netherlands, St. Eustatius and the St. Eustatius Red Cross will be present to ensure the safety of paraders.
In the meantime, the cultural exchange project is a collaboration between the Mega D Youth Foundation, Statia Tourism Department and the St. Eustatius Culture Department.
On Tuesday, Galloway and her delegation were met at the Airport by a welcoming committee consisting of Director of Tourism Charles Lindo, singer MJ Courtar, Director of the Mega D Youth Foundation and MJ’s manager Dion “Mega D” Humphreys amongst others.
From the airport, the group went to the Bethel Methodist School where an assembly was held in MJ and Princess Galloway’s honour. During the assembly pupils sang “Beautiful Statia.” Humphreys also addressed the gathering. He said the first part of a music video involving Princess Galloway was shot in Aruba in October and the second portion will be filmed in Statia. The video will be released at a later date, Humphreys said. The video will be a positive representation of both Aruba and Statia.
During the assembly MJ and Princess Galloway performed their song “Oranjestad: Island to island.” During the first phase of the cultural exchange, MJ travelled to Aruba along with Humphreys and the Founder of CHRWN Entertainment and Talent Agency Sherees Timber. The Statia group along with Princess Galloway visited many locations in Aruba and met many persons.
