PHILIPSBURG–In 21 years of organizing Prom Night in St. Maarten, the Teen Times crew has never experienced what happened at Prom Night 2018 on Sunday, July 1. The senior students of the Class of 2018 appeared at their Prom in extravagant fashion, using a drum band, a chariot, bodyguards, a live snake, trumpets and more to announce that they had arrived.
“It was awesome,” Teen Times coordinator Rochelayne Rommy-Richardson said. “Totally unexpected and totally beautiful. We heard that the Class of 2018 was going all out for Prom Night, but we were not expecting all of that. It was wow.”
Prom Night is the annual “elegantly” formal affair exclusively for all high school seniors in Dutch St. Maarten and French St. Martin. On Sunday it was held at Jungle Club SXM and caused quite a stir on the Simpson Bay stretch. Traffic was backed up for several minutes every time a student arrived with an elaborate entrance routine.
Rommy-Richardson explained that elaborate entrances only became a staple at Prom over the past two years. “We have always had the limousines and other luxury cars rolling up to drop off students. But lately the students and their parents have been taking it to another level. This year was the highest level yet,” she said.
The theme of Prom Night 2018 was “Gods and Goddesses” and Rommy-Richardson said the students clearly embraced that theme fully. “The ladies looked like goddesses of Greek mythology and even African folklore. The guys did their part with well-tailored tuxedos and suits. It was amazing how much they went along with the theme which is usually only meant for the decor,” she said.
As for the Prom itself, the students once again partied through the night to the tunes of the Cut Creator DJ Outkast. Several prizes were also handed out to students thanks to sponsors Travel Planners and TelEm, which donated travel vouchers and smartphones respectively.
The crown of Prom Queen went to Tenisha Rollox, who also won the Best Dress prize after she “literally stopped everyone in their tracks with that dress,” Rommy-Richardson said.
The prize for Prom King went to Dion Bryan, who was on the dance floor from start to finish.
Other prizes went to Best Couple, Best Suit, Prom Prince and Prom Princess.
Teen Times extended its thanks to Janique Coram and the Just Creative SXM team who handled the décor for the Prom. Jungle Club SXM, Travel Planners, TelEm, Kevin “Suppa Kid” Petrona, Shary Brunings, Rumari Rogers, Elvis Harrigan and Genesis Music Group for their participation in making Prom Night a great success.
“We had a great time and from what we saw so did the Class of 2018. They have elevated Prom to new levels and extravagance and we are excited what will happen next year. We thank the parents and students for creating memories with Teen Times and we look forward to continuing this proud tradition for our students well into the future,” Rommy-Richardson said.
