PHILIPSBURG--The St. Maarten Library held a closing ceremony on November 28 to recognise the graduates of its “Senior Technology Programme”, which aims to help “older adults across the island to more confidently navigate the digital world”.

“This year, our cyber-seniors participants received certifications reflecting their accomplishments: beginners received their Foundational Technology Certificates, while those who completed the advanced curriculum were awarded Advanced Technology Certificates,” the library said in a press release. “Inspiring speeches from participants and library staff highlighted how the programme has enriched lives, strengthened confidence and fostered community connections.”

The library thanked its team and partners, including Social and Health Insurances SZV, Windward Islands Bank (WIB) and the St. Maarten Tax Office.

Since February, the programme has offered free classes on topics such as e-mail, smartphone basics, online banking, Internet safety, tax filing and e-books.

“Seniors reported that the programme not only enhanced their technical skills but also kept their minds active and encouraged social engagement,” the library said. “Despite space limits of 10 participants per session, we converted library corners into classrooms, creating a welcoming and close-knit learning environment. The high demand demonstrates our seniors’ eagerness to learn and grow in the digital world.”

Programme lead Francia Housen said: “The cyber-seniors programme not only taught seniors how to use technology but also strengthened their confidence and connection to the wider community.”

Registration for next year’s sessions open in February 2026.
