Several activities planned for Catholic Schools Week | THE DAILY HERALD

PHILIPSBURG–Catholic Education St. Maarten Foundation SKOS will be celebrating its annual Catholic Schools Week February 4-8 under the theme “We are called to be grateful.”

The event is intended to enhance the unity amongst Catholic schools and to celebrate the 129th year of Catholic education in St. Maarten. A series of activities have been planned to highlight the occasion. “During the week, students and staff will be reminded that they should be grateful for the many things God has blessed them with. We are especially grateful for the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Saviour,” SKOS said in a press release on Thursday.

On Saturday, February 2, and Sunday, February 3, pupils and staff will wear their school/work uniform when attending Mass. This will be done to highlight the awareness of Catholic Schools Week 2019 and to demonstrate the connection between Catholic Schools and the Catholic Church

On Monday, February 4, each school will have an opening ceremony of Catholic Schools Week during their school assembly and open house, where there will be presentations and students will have art work on display.

On Wednesday, February 6, a Thanksgiving Mass and performances will be held at L.B. Scot Sports Auditorium from 7:30am to 10:30am.

On Friday, February 8, a Teachers Formation Day will be held at St. Dominic High School. There will not be any school for students on this day. The programme will start with a prayer service led by Parish Priest Reverend Father Adam Oleszczuk. Workshops will also be held during the day, themed “Journey to a higher wellbeing.” Presenters are residents of St. Maarten and are professionals in their respective fields of expertise; they include Dr. Tasheena Maccow Thomas, Dr. Erna Mea Francis Cotton, Melba Wescott, Cathrine Burns, Fernando Richardson and Peter Smits.

SKOS was established in 1890, and is the competent authority for seven schools: six primary schools and one English high school. Attached to every primary school is an Early Childhood Stimulation Group and an after-school programme, which runs until 5:00pm. The foundation caters to a total of 1,853 students and a staff of 230.
