Simpson Bay Lagoon is experiencing a severe green algae bloom. This has left the water surface coated in several areas with a brownish coating. Nature Foundation first sounded the alarm about the algae bloom in August 2018. Tadzio Bervoets of the foundation said that sadly the situation is getting worse as can be seen in the water off Porto Cupecoy.
That section of the lagoon is the last point downwind so everything in the lagoon – including trash and the evidence of the algae bloom end up there. The algae bloom is indicative of an increase in pollution levels and a decrease in water quality in the lagoon.
