PHILIPSBURG–Customers going to pay their water and electricity bills at GEBE’s new main building on Walter Nisbeth Road (Pondfill) will soon no longer have to stand waiting in line in the blazing sun, as the utilities company plans to cover the area as well as place seating facilities for the comfort of its clients.
GEBE Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kenrick Chittick said on Tuesday that plans were already in the pipeline to have the area covered and seating facilities placed outside; it is just that the company did not get a chance to get this done as yet.
The company came in for a lot of criticism in the community and on social media after this newspaper published a photo on Tuesday showing a long queue of persons standing in line in the blazing sun outside GEBE’s new main building to pay their electricity and water bills. In mid-December the company relocated to its newly-renovated main building (former distribution building) and customers are now able to handle transactions at this location. The inside of the building, for paying bills, has a limited number of seating facilities to accommodate a limited number of clients at times, forcing persons to have to stand outside until there is space inside for them to enter.
“We will be getting the outside area covered. Those plans were in the pipeline already,” Chittick said in an invited comment on the matter on Tuesday. He said the previous location was “way too small” and the company was forced to prepare its new location in phases. He said the area would be covered “as soon as possible” during the first quarter of this year. A covered seating area was also created for customers at the previous location where paying of bills was done at the management building.
