Six awarded for cultural role by Native Sons Productions

ANGUILLA–Six persons were recognised and awarded for the part they have played in Anguilla’s culture through the Culturally Yours Show on Kool FM Radio. The awardees were John Edwards. Bob Harrigan, Norril Gumbs, Janice Hodge, Lana Connor Hoyoung and Joan Carty. The ceremony took place on Saturday, May 13, at the CuisinArt Golf Resort and Spa. The group was also celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Culturally Yours show which debuted in 2007 on Kool FM.

According to Jerry Dice Richardson and Leroy Richardson, producers of the show, “We have decided to award our Cultural gems for their selfless contributions and active involvement in the Anguillian Culture.

Cultural heritage can provide an automatic sense of unity and belonging within a group and allows us to better understand previous generations and the history of where we come from. Cultural heritage is based on the aspects of our past that we cherish, want to keep and pass on to future generations and the outside world.”

The keynote address with the focus “Safeguarding and Strengthening Our Cultural Values” was presented by Permanent Secretary Bonnie Richardson-Lake. Shellya Rogers spoke on “Preservation of Culture and Heritage for future Generations” and Lindel Brookes spoke on “The Importance of Culture.”

The awards were presented by Director of Youth and Culture Bren Romney and Octavia Fleming. Kenneth Hodge congratulated the awardees and Native Sons for their continued promotion of culture.
