- EUSTATIUS–A workshop titled “Dangers of Cyber-Net” was held recently held on St. Eustatius for all sixth graders of the island’s five primary schools.
The three-hour workshop at Mike van Putten Youth Center was the result of a collaboration between the Public Health Department of St. Eustatius and We Can Young Team Statia.
A total of 27 students attended the workshop and were informed on the importance of having accurate knowledge about the dangers that are lurking on the Internet, such as pornography and predators prowling in cyber-net.
Discussions were further held on the subjects of puberty, sexuality, facial and body hygiene, peer pressure, norms, values and respect. Fun games were also used as role play to ensure the participants understood the information that was being shared with them. Josue Ferrol and Valda Hazel of St. Maarten were the workshop facilitators.
“We live in an age where children are exposed to the Internet at a tender age. This will increase as they transfer from primary to secondary education. It is, therefore, important that they become aware of the dangers of cyber-net. It is our hope that these 27 students will apply what they have learned during this workshop,” states STI/AIDS Coordinator Shanna Mercera-Gibbs.
