PHILIPSBURG–Sheer Art Gallery on Front Street is currently celebrating its seventh anniversary with a new exhibition themed: “Sixty Shades” of Urmain Dormoy.
The gallery’s new exhibition is scheduled to open on Sunday, December 9, and will feature 60 paintings from artist Urmain Dormoy, who has received a Royal decoration and is an icon in the field of arts. He is well known around the island with his bold blond hair and “smart” dress attire.
Always having a passion for the arts, Dormoy began painting under the guidance of renowned artist Ruby Bute, when he was in his early thirties. His new works being presented at Sheer include pastel and acrylic styles, which are influences from his life experiences, such as his mother’s garden, his father’s roosters and his personal love for music and sensuality.
Sheer Art Gallery owner Valentin Davis said the paintings are “amazingly beautiful.” This will be Sheer’s second exhibition of Dormoy’s art work. In addition to painting, Dormoy is also a musical artist, who has been playing the trumpet, drums and other acoustic instruments since his early years in Aruba and now in St. Maarten, where he participated in and formed some nine musical bands.
Davis urges all residents and tourist to view and purchase the art work, which will remain on exhibition until February 9, 2019. Sheer has showcased paintings in the past of Roland Richardson, Francis Eck, Cynric Griffith, Mounette Radot, Ruby Bute, Cati Burnot, Lynne Parsons, Valerie Daux, Stephanie Tihany, Silka Kartcher, Larry Mc. Gill and young artist Magueda Jackson.
Sheer’s Contemporary Art Gallery is open daily as of Tuesday, December 11, from 11:00am to 3:00pm and from 6:00pm to 9:00pm and will be closed on Sunday mornings and Monday evenings.
Sheer Art Gallery is located at 44 Front Street, in the Promenade Mall, opposite Horizon View Hotel, within the shopping district of Holland House and the Catholic Church.
