CAY HILL–The St. Maarten Laboratory Services (SLS) and the Caribbean Association of Medical Technologists CASMET on March 7, held their first educational session for the year under the theme: “HIV positive, what now?”
The two-hour session was facilitated by St. Maarten AIDS Foundation president and general practitioner Dr. Gerard van Osch.
Parties hope to hold monthly educational sessions for medical technologists and phlebotomists with different professionals such as physicians and specialists being presenters.
A future goals is to host the CASMET Biennium General Meeting and Symposium in St. Maarten in 2019. This meeting will bring together 150 to 200 persons such as medical technologists, phlebotomists, specialists and medical suppliers around the Caribbean and USA. “This means a great opportunity to put St. Maarten on the medical world map. It is also a boost for the tourism of St. Maarten,” it was stated in a press release.
“SLS may be the first laboratory on the island that joined CASMET, but other laboratories are more than welcome to join. Together we can be better,” CASMET St. Maarten Chairperson Joshua Djemadi said in the release.
SLS officially became a member of CASMET in August 2017. The local CASMET branch wants to maintain the association’s mission and vision, which amongst other things is to be recognised as the Caribbean association for medical laboratory professionals dedicated to meeting the needs and requirements of its members and clients, providing dynamic visionary leadership, advocacy at the highest level, educational development and support for regulatory mechanisms encouraging members to aspire to the highest standards of professional conduct, thereby promoting delivery of quality health.
