PHILIPSBURG–GEBE workers are now represented by the St. Maarten Communication Union (SMCU), which won the right to represent 139 employees at GEBE during a referendum on Friday.
The workers formerly were represented by Windward Islands Federation of Labour
(WIFOL), but were not happy with the representation they received and sought new representation. Ninety workers voted for the union during the referendum.
SMCU stated in a press release on Sunday, “We are happy with the turnout of the employees and look forward to start having official meetings with the management of GEBE. It is also the intention of SMCU to continue expanding itself with the Government-owned companies.”
