PHILIPSBURG–At least one motion is expected to come on the floor in today’s plenary session of Parliament on the draft 2018 budget.
Member of Parliament (MP) Wycliffe Smith (St. Maarten Christian Party) stated in last week’s Central Committee meeting his intention to table a motion calling on fellow legislators to tighten their belt along with the rest of the country by taking a salary cut.
Smith will need the support are at least two other MPs to bring the motion to the floor and the support of most MPs to pass it.
Getting the motion passed is only one step. The salaries of MPs, as that of ministers, are regulated by law. This means, a law change and not just a simple motion is required to ensure the action has teeth.
Also, on today’s agenda are: adoption of the advice on the installation and composition of the Permanent and Ad hoc Committees of Parliament, advice on the installation and composition of the Committees of the Latin American Parliament Parlatino, advice on the regulation for fraction workers of Parliament, and the appointment of a chairperson and vice chairpersons of Parliament.
The parliamentary session will be live on St. Maarten Cable TV Channel 115, Pearl Radio FM 98.1, SXMGOV Radio 107.9 FM, www.pearlfmradio.sx, www.sxmparliament.org and Facebook.com/Parliament of Sint Maarten.
