PHILIPSBURG–Education Minister Wycliffe Smith said on Wednesday that the success and accomplishments of study financing recipient and former St. Maarten Academy student Dr. Damien Jonas Wilson offers hope for the future generation.
Wilson returned home to St. Maarten over the weekend after accomplishing his dream of becoming a general medical doctor and biomolecular engineer, and he is ready to give back to his community in whatever way he can.
“We must be proud of Dr. Wilson and others like him who return to serve their people and their country,” Smith told reporters at the live Council of Ministers press briefing. “Such successes make us as a people proud. Such successes give us hope in the upcoming generation. Such successes will also motivate and inspire our young people to strive, to achieve and be the best they can be.”
Wilson is a dual professional – a general practitioner (medical doctor), having completed training in General Medicine and Surgery at University of Zagreb Faculty of Medicine in the Republic of Croatia, and a biomolecular engineer from the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands.
Smith said Wilson had received study financing from the St. Maarten Government. “Having just presented the (draft) law on study financing last week to Parliament, Dr. Wilson’s accomplishments in the fields of engineering and medicine tell me that St. Maarten is on the right track with its law on study financing, which will offer financial aid to many more students to pursue their dream and accomplish great things in the fields of academics, the arts and sports.
“Let me say to our students: if you are motivated to pursue a profession or a career and you meet the requirements, the government is there for you through study financing to help you achieve your goals.”
He commended Wilson, his parents David and Chantal Wilson, as well as his family and friends and said the young doctor will soon begin his practice at St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC). Smith said he had the honour and privilege to welcome Wilson back home on Sunday, when he returned.
