Smith to meet with PSVE teachers Thurs. | THE DAILY HERALD

EBENEZER–The Foundation for Academic and Vocational Education (FAVE) has called a general meeting for teachers of the Preparatory Secondary Vocational Education (PSVE) section of St. Maarten Academy and the Windward Islands Teachers Union (WITU) at 11:00am Thursday, August 23.

Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports Affairs (ECYS) Wycliffe Smith and his Chief of Staff Peter Gittens will also attend the meeting.

Smith had told reporters last week that he would be looking into the situation at the school with a view of resolving it. Smith had said he wanted to assure the public and parents that his ministry “is talking to parties” in an attempt to seek a solution in the interest of the school’s roughly 300 students.

Smith said that as Minister of Education and in the interest of all parties concerned “we should be ensuring that students receive quality education, which is why students are in school. I will reach out to relevant parties to seek solutions in interest of students.”

Some PSVE staffers stayed away from school last week during the first week of the new academic year. Last Monday 17 staffers were absent from school, on Tuesday 11 were absent, on Wednesday six were absent and on Thursday five staffers were absent.

The absenteeism came in the midst of a conflict between the staffers and PSVE Principal Lavern Nelson, whom the teachers want removed from her position and reassigned to another post. FAVE has maintained that Nelson will not be removed and considers the teachers’ complaints personal attacks, frivolous and unsubstantiated.
