Participants in the recently-concluded cardiology symposium.
CAY HILL–St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC), in partnership with Health City Cayman Islands, Cay Hill Pharmacy and Windward Islands Medical Association (WIMA) hosted a cardiology symposium in honour of parting cardiologist Dr. Meredith Sedney recently.
Dr. Sedney was key in the development of the Cardiology Department in SMMC and has formally retired after eight years of service to the hospital and patients in St. Maarten, Saba and St. Eustatius.
Some 100 participants from various organisations were at the event. Attendees spent a full day at American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine learning about the latest in cardiology developments and issues in St. Maarten.
The symposium was aimed at bringing medical professionals together to share and educate on cardiovascular care through education, research promotion, development and application of standards and guidelines. Lectures delivered by speakers from St. Maarten, Curaçao and the Cayman Islands provided a comprehensive state-of-the-art update on the clinical uses of various techniques in the diagnosis, prognosis and management of common heart diseases.
Dr. Sedney stated, “Cardiologic care in St. Maarten started here at SMMC in 2011. Within eight years, a sufficiently stable and competent Department of Cardiology was developed, providing comprehensive care in the area of cardiology for our patients in St. Maarten and the surrounding islands.
“I can confidently say, with the enthusiasm and dedication of my colleagues I leave SMMC knowing that we have an innovative Department of Cardiology proving quality care to our patients under the care of Dr. Emiko Bird-Lake.”
The cardiology symposium provided a unique learning experience delivered in an open, supportive, enjoyable and friendly atmosphere.
