CAY HILL–St. Maarten Medical Center’s (SMMC’s) operational expenses went up by about 3.3 million guilders in 2018, compared to the year prior.
According to figures provided by SMMC General Director Kees Klarenbeek during a Parliament meeting last week, SMMC’s operational expenses stood at NAf. 50,923,000 in 2016; NAf. 52,057,000 in 2017 and NAf. 55,357,000 in 2018. These figures are excluding the hospital pharmacy. Klarenbeek said the increase over the three-year period was primarily due to salaries and the increased number of medical specialists and related medical supplies.
In giving a breakdown of the expenses per year, Klarenbeek said the medical institution had forked out NAf. 29,331,000 in salaries and wages in 2016; NAf. 30,802,000 in 2017 and NAf. 33,934,000 in 2018.
In 2016, SMMC paid NAf. 4,010,000 in social securities; NAf. 3,975,000 in 2017 and NAf. 4,663,000 in 2018.
Medical supplies cost the institution NAf. 8,034,000 in 2016, NAf. 6,085,000 in 2017 and NAf. 8,999,000 in 2018.
In 2016, SMMC paid NAf. 4,058,000 in housing expenses (primarily maintenance); 4,230,000 in 2017 and 4,336,000 in 2018.
General expenses amounted to NAf. 2,049,000 in 2016; NAf. 3,864,000 in 2017 and NAf. 5,737,000 in 2018.
“Other” expenses were NAf. 216,000 in 2016; NAf. 138,000 in 2017 and NAf. 300,000 in 2019. Other costs for the three years included depreciation and “release provision.”
