SMMC to host Sleep Apnoea and Snoring public session | THE DAILY HERALD

CAY HILL–St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) will be hosting a public session on Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and Snoring at University of St. Maarten (USM) from 7:30pm Friday, November 8.

The session will be facilitated by cardiologist Dr. Emiko Bird-Lake and otolaryngologists Dr. Hubert Faber, Dr. Dick Wong Chung and Dr. Maarten Majoor, and will cover a wide variety of topics, including paediatric obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, SMMC announced in a press release on Tuesday.

“Obstructive sleep apnoea is a common sleep disorder characterised by pauses in breathing during sleep and the disruption of normal sleep. Common symptoms are unexplained daytime sleepiness, restless sleep and snoring with periods of silence followed by gasps,” the release stated.

“Other symptoms include morning headaches, insomnia, trouble concentrating, mood changes, depression, forgetfulness, increased heart rate and blood pressure, overweight in children, mood changes, sleep terrors and heavy night sweats.”

In addition, obstructive sleep apnoea alters glucose metabolism and promotes insulin resistance resulting in health complications such as heart disease, increased blood pressure, diabetes and obesity which lead to increased health risks and medical cost for patients.

The public session will be followed by a symposium for doctors and other medical professionals in St. Maarten and surrounding islands with the aim of organising a sleep centre in St. Maarten.

The symposium will be in collaboration with specialists, orthodontist Dr. Wissam El Hage and the Sleep and Breathing Disorders Centre.

SMMC encourages the general public to attend and learn more about Sleep Apnoea and Snoring and its treatment.
