Dr. Stanley Lalta, lecturer during Social Security Week.

ANGUILLA–Social Security Week is to be held from November 3 to 9 under the theme “Social Security: Promoting a Culture of Health and Financial Security.” This year, as part of the week of activities to mark the 39th year since the passage of the Social Security Act, the Social Security Board is delighted to collaborate with The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, Health Economics Unit (HEU) of the Centre for Health Economics (The UWI-HEU) in hosting the 13th Caribbean Conference on Health Financing Initiatives, from November 6 to 8. It will be held at the CuisinArt Resort and is for registered participants.

The week will start with a church service at the Hilltop Baptist Church at Island Harbour. During the week there will be addresses by Premier Victor Banks, Chairman of the Board Sean Richard and Director of Social Security, Timothy Hodge. One of the highlights is a lecture on Thursday, November 7, by Dr. Stanley Lalta of Trinidad and Tobago. He is the Coordinator of the 13th Caribbean Conference and the lecture is entitled “Connecting the Dots: Patterns of Work, Health and the Future of Social Security in the Caribbean”. Lalta, who currently serves as Research Fellow at The UWI-HEU, is an economist with over 25 years of experience in teaching, training, consulting and policy research in health and development matters in almost all countries of the English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean.

The Caribbean Conferences originated from discussion at the 2006 Annual Meeting of Caribbean Social Security Organisations in Belize, when it was agreed to establish a regional forum to enhance knowledge and capabilities in planning and administering health-financing Initiatives. The 13th Conference follows previous conferences held in the region. In keeping with the recommendations, the 13th Conference focuses on critical matters pertaining to “Fiscal Space and Sustainability in Health Financing”. Key areas of emphasis will be influences on tax arrangements and other sources of funds for health; national health accounts; projecting health costs and management strategies for financial sustainability.

The week will end with a health walk and breakfast on Saturday, November 9. The general public is invited to attend the activities.
