CYRUS WATHEY SQUARE–Memorial Day, (in Dutch: Dodenherdenkingsdag), will be marked today, Friday, with a solemn march and wreath-laying ceremony starting at 4:30pm.
Military personnel and civilians who died during World War II and military personnel who died in peacekeeping and other missions since World War II are remembered every year on May 4 throughout the Dutch Kingdom.
The solemn march of the Royal Dutch Marines, Police, Voluntary Corps St. Maarten VKS and the Youth Brigade starts at Clem Labega Square and heads to Captain Hodge Wharf where a wreath-laying ceremony will take place in front of the War Memorial.
Two minutes before the ceremony, the bells of surrounding churches will toll.
Acting Governor Reynold Groeneveldt, Parliament Chairwoman Sarah Wescot-Williams, and Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin will lay wreaths at the memorial. The programme includes a prayer by Father Rawlins followed by two minutes of silence, and poem by Maugada Jackson.
The public is invited by the Council of Ministers to pay tribute to those who fought and continue to fight for freedom.
