Squatter sentenced for unlawful entry | THE DAILY HERALD

PHILIPSBURG–A 44-year-old man was sentenced in absentia on Thursday to two weeks suspended for unlawful entry at a vacation home owned by a resident of the United States.

The Judge in the Court of First Instance did not find it proven that the squatter, who had stayed in the residence for a month between January 6, 2019, and February 6, 2019, had also destroyed household goods during his illegal stay. The Judge said she did not find sufficient evidence for this charge.

The defendant, identified as Daniel Novo from France, had gained access to the building by breaking a window. The police had searched the premises and had found the homeless and unemployed man while he was hiding under a bed.

The Court, which described the suspect as a “cheeky monkey,” sentenced him according to the Prosecutor’s demand because he had failed to show up for his trial.
