Charter member Eric Henriquez reads the installation oath as Club President Lenora Sneek-Gibbs holds the gavel.
ST. EUSTATIUS–The new board of the St. Eustatius Lions Club was installed on Sunday afternoon by Eric Henriquez, the only charter member still alive.
Lenora “Nora” Sneek-Gibbs is the Club’s President, Bernadine Pants – Secretary, Siem Dijkshoorn – Treasurer, Dr. George Odongo – First Vice President, Sharmin Turner – Second Vice President, Dwayne Lindo – Third Vice President, Eric Henriquez – Tail Twister, Eileen Patrick-Woodley – Tamer, Ramona Hendrickson – First Year Director, Maria Farrel – Second Year Director, Maritza Patrick – First Year Director, Leonie Brown – Second Year Director and Amanda Schmidt – Membership Director.
Sneek-Gibbs then presented the “President Award” to Dine Pandt, Dijkshoorn and Patrick-Woodley. Pandt has served on the Lions Club board as a member from 2000 when she joined the club. Dijkshoorn was singled out for his contributions. Patrick was honoured for her commitment to the Club.
Club board members and award recipients
Contractor Arthur Brown, who does most of the construction work for the Club and mostly for free, was honoured with the President’s Award; so were Cornelius Dinzey, Etienne Timber, Elvis Schmidt, Mickey Schmidt, Andres Mercera, Hubert and Anthony Windefelde. This group fenced the entire back of the Den, a task the Club would not have been able to do on their own.
Sneek-Gibbs highlighted the recent upgrades and changes made to the Mike van Putten Youth Center commonly called the Lion’s Den. Two additional carnival booths were built with screens and sinks.
A new stage floor was installed in the Den along with two new speakers to replace the ones that were stolen. The Den also got a new freezer that will be useful in future fundraising food sales. The biggest dream of the Club is to have the entire interior of the Lion’s Den tiled.
The Club had encountered some tax issues which have since been cleared up; however, a case was filled with the National Ombudsman. Due to this step, not only the Lions Club, but for all non-governmental organizations will not pay taxes for the coming year.
A barbecue lunch at the Den followed the installation ceremony.
