Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin and Prime Minister Mia Mottley.
BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS–Possible future collaboration through the exchange and sharing of knowledge between Barbadian and St. Maarten professionals was amongst the issues discussed when St. Maarten Prime Minister (PM) Leona Romeo-Marlin and Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley met recently.
Parties also discussed possible collaboration in the areas of education, disaster management, justice and hospitality, specifically defining standards of excellence in the service industry.
Discussions were also held on how the reconstruction process is going in St. Maarten, working with the World Bank, and advocating for the spreading of the insurance pool by increasing the number of countries participating in a common regional insurance scheme.
The two PMs met while Romeo-Marlin was in Barbados on a working visit, attending the 2019 Understanding Risk (UR) Caribbean Conference.
On Mottley’s invitation, Romeo-Marlin attended the launch of My Political Journey by former Prime Minister of Jamaica P.J. Patterson. The book covers Jamaican development after colonialism, Caribbean regionalism through CARICOM, and bringing back value and ethics to politics by raising the standards of how Caribbean politicians conduct themselves.
Before the visit concluded, Romeo-Marlin invited Mottley to be the keynote speaker at the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) Conference, which will be held in St. Maarten December 2-6.
Mottley became Barbados’ eighth and first female Prime Minister on May 25, 2018. She also serves as Minister of Finance, Economic Affairs and Investment, and Minister of National Security and the Civil Service.
