St. Maarten continues quest to join Caricom | THE DAILY HERALD

Caricom Secretary-General Irwin LaRocque and Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin.

PHILIPSBURG–A high level delegation from the Caribbean Community Caricom paid a working visit to St. Maarten last week for discussions on the further formalisation of the country’s application to become an associate member of the regional body. Caricom Secretary General Irwin LaRocque led the delegation.

Prime Minister Leona Romeo-Marlin and Tourism and Economic Affairs Minister Stuart Johnson represented the Council of Ministers in the meeting where the discussion focused on areas of mutual benefit and potential cooperation on the road to associate membership.

Caricom heads of government mandated Larocque earlier this year to begin negotiations with the Dutch Caribbean territories to better determine their expectations of associate membership and what benefits such relationships could yield for the regional bloc. The Caricom delegation visited Aruba and Curaçao prior to heading to St. Maarten.

LaRocque shared with government that associate membership would allow the country access to the majority of meetings and open the door to regional organisations such as Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) and the Climate Change Center.

St. Maarten already has access to the Caribbean Public Health Agency CarPHA and the Caribbean Examination Council CXC.

LaRocque also paid a courtesy visit to Governor Eugene Holiday before concluding his working visit here.
