St. Maarten’s ‘Da Lion’ wins Power Soca SSS | THE DAILY HERALD

ST. EUSTATIUS–St. Maarten’s Da Lion won the Power Soca SSS edition which took place at Carnival City. Competitors from Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten competed for the top prize.

Fans and supporters from Saba and St. Maarten travelled to the island to show their support. Three boats from Saba arrived in St. Eustatius on Friday, while full flights from different airlines touched down at F.D. Roosevelt Airport carrying persons who said they couldn’t wait for the show, organised by promoter Ricardo “Thachie” Fortin Jr. of CT Creativity.

There were 11 performers vying for the prize. Face, 2Stroke, Mr. Spice, T-Time, King Trini, Big Shen and Showtime HD represented Statia and Ebony Empress, Da Lion, and King Kembe competed for St. Maarten. Daddy Slim was the lone performer from Saba during the competition, which was moderated by Leoncio “The Man Private” Lopes.

St. Maarten narrowly missed sweeping the competition during which each contestant performed with the band of their choice.

Da Lion, the winner of the competition received 252 points. First runner-up was Ebony Empress, the lone woman in the competition with 248 points. Second runner-up was T-Time with 214 points, followed by King Kembe (213), Daddy Slim (209), 2 Stroke (205), ShowTime (198), Face (193), Mr. Spice (189), Big Shen (177) and King Trini (161).

Carnival continues tonight, Tuesday, with Youth Night 2018, featuring some of Statia’s own talented youths who will showcase their talents with songs, dance, skits and modelling. The young and upcoming Titus Band will also be launched.

There will be four main acts performing, among which are two-time Junior Road March Queen “Kay” and Elona Richardson from St. Maarten.

Big Shen, Statia’s own international artiste who resides in the Netherlands and who is right now blazing the airwaves with his number-one single “Yuh Body” featuring Shockman and award-winning singer Aaron Duncan from Trinidad and Tobago will be completing the line-up.
