EUSTATIUS–State Secretary of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations Raymond Knops has approved the third and fourth amendments to the budget for 2018, he stated in three letters sent to Government Commissioner of St. Eustatius Mike Franco on Friday, December 21. The amendments lead to a surplus in Statia’s budget for 2018 of US $12,018.
The amendments lead to US $15,301,093 in income for the Island Government of St. Eustatius and to total expenditures of $15,289,075. State secretary Knops stated that the budget amendments were in accordance with the FinBES law.
Knops said he received the budget for 2019 on November 29, 2018. He said in presenting the 2019 budget, the Public Entity of St. Eustatius had realized some “clear” improvements in comparison with the draft budget, especially where it concerned “readability” and the provision of information. “These developments are good steps towards sustainable government finances,” the state secretary wrote.
In his letter, in which he presented the budget for 2019 to the state secretary, commissioner Franco indicated which elements in the budget were to be improved in order to bring the 2020 budget to a higher level. Among the elements mentioned were the maintenance of capital goods and the land policy.
“I am aware that the road to sustainable public finances is not one that will be realized within a few months. Therefore, I request you to continue to implement the improvement you have planned. You have also recently received the financial resources for this. I would like to ask you to consult on the spending of these funds as soon as possible,” state secretary Knops stated in his letter to commissioner Franco.
