ST. EUSTATIUS–St. Eustatius Public Health Department advises the public not look at the sun directly without proper protection during today’s partial solar eclipse as this may cause eye damage. The partial solar eclipse, caused when moon covers part of the sun’s disk is expected to be visible locally between 2:18pm and 4:49pm, with maximum coverage at 3:38pm. Adults are cautioned to take care not only of their eyes, but those of their children who may be too young to understand the danger of the event.
Ordinary sunglasses, even though these may be very dark, are not safe enough for looking at the sun they explained. The light from the sun is very intense and concentrated into a very small area, and then that light is converted into heat and that heat can permanently damage the retina of the eye. People who would want to experience this natural phenomenon are advised by the Health Department to purchase special eclipse glasses. The Department did try to obtain eclipse glasses, but was unable to do so.
