  1. EUSTATIUS–The Third Annual Men’s Cook-off competition took place at Gwendoline van Putten School on Thursday, November 21.

The event was a collaboration of the “Boyz to Gentlemen” club and the St. Eustatius Public Health Department.

The second team won the overall competition with a total of 827 point, the third team came in at second place with 820 points and in third place was the first team with 815 points.

Shanna Mercera-Gibbs and Bernadine Pandt of the Public Health Department added up the points for the competition.

The cook-off featured three teams that competed to be declared the winner of the event. The three judges for the competition were head judge Ingrid Houtman, Director of Tourism Charles Lindo who stated that he is a chef by trade, and Alicia Schobbe.

The contestants were judged on presentation, cleanliness, timing, consistency, colour, texture and flavour.

The teams prepared several dishes such as appetisers, a main course, desserts and others.

Deputy Government Commissioner Mervyn Stegers was also present at the event. He said a few words commending the teams on their delicious creations and the restaurant quality of the food.

Stegers encouraged the organisers of the event to continue, as the cook-off is great fun and inspiring and he looked forward to digging into the dishes that were being prepared.

Houtman said she loved how the members of the teams all were working together as one entity and she was impressed by the teamwork exhibited. She commended the teams for their lovely service and how the dishes were put together.

The cook-off also had a multitude of helpers and runners who donated their time to the event’s success.

Dr. Gerwin Schobbe of the Health Department, who also worked as the photographer for the occasion, said that many times there were complaints that there were not enough activities geared towards men. He said this event showed that more of an effort is being made to stem these complaints. Schobbe said he hoped that everyone would have a great time and that the occasion could grow to even greater heights next year. He encouraged the teams to work together and have a fine night out.

Mercera-Gibbs said the “Boyz to Gentlemen” club looks to transition boys into gentleman via positive reinforcement. She said one of the foundation’s aims was to be a positive role model. The event that evening was to show appreciation to the men in the community, she said.

The judges, organisers, helpers, runners and spectators congratulated the teams on a job well done and encouraged the teams to come back next year to compete once again.

The event was broadcast live on social media.
