ST. EUSTATIUS–After two years of intense study and practice, seven student nurses from St. Eustatius Community Home Care Centre and one from St. Eustatius Auxiliary Home became certified nursing assistants on Wednesday.

A ceremony for the new nursing assistants was held at the Community Home Care office with Government Commissioner Marcolino “Mike” Franco, Director of St. Eustatius Healthcare Foundation Dr. Gerard Berkel, and other guests, family members and friends of the nurses in attendance.

The programme was part of a two-year project of the Directorate of Social Welfare, sponsored by the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.

The aim of the project was  the promotion of preventive integral care and the safety and social welfare of senior citizens who are living alone, seniors who are alone during the day, and seniors who are no longer able to care for themselves independently.

The project also hopes to combat social isolation among seniors by supporting, guiding, coaching and empowering their caregivers.

The programme also promotes the social and economic position of the low socio-economic status of the population by offering education, re-training and further training in health care, and providing employment and intensive support, said Gregory Melfor of the Directorate of Social Welfare.

The nurses received their training at St. Eustatius Community Centre, Auxiliary Home and Queen Beatrix Medical Centre (QBMC). The programme was supervised and certified by Gwendoline van Putten Secondary School, in collaboration with Vitalis College in Breda, the Netherlands.

The new graduates will continue their professional career at QBMC and the District Home Department.
