ST. EUSTATIUS–The fourth annual New Year’s Splash 2019 took place on Tuesday, January 1, in front of Scubaqua dive centre at Oranje Bay. Many persons took take part in the New Year’s Day tradition.
New Year’s Splash is a Dutch tradition to start the New Year fresh, so that persons can get rid of their hangover by splashing into the cold ocean.
New Year’s Splash 2019 was hosted by Scubaqua and Old Gin House grand inn and restaurant. Traditional Dutch pea soup and “oliebollen” (dough balls) were served to those taking a splash.
After the New Year’s Splash, persons headed to the afterparty where DJ Gerard entertained with his lively music.
Last year’s Splash was hampered by the passing of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 which caused safety issues because of the lack of sand on the beach which exposed persons to rocks on the sea bottom. This year, the sand had returned, and persons dashed into the cold water and splashed in the ocean.
