ST. EUSTATIUS–Centre for Youth and Family (CYF) has launched a campaign against child abuse in St. Eustatius entitled “Be a hero, break the cycle of violence.” During the week CYF visited various schools around the island to promote the campaign.
CYF’s social worker Shomica Griffith said that on Tuesday, CYF observed United Nations’ Universal Children’s Day on November 20.
CYF, in collaboration with young-teenager group Youth in Action, created a skit in which child abuse was presented in various age-appropriate scenarios in the schools. The campaign encourages each and every child from group six to eight to become a hero.
“This was done so that together with the children we can break the silence on Statia pertaining to child abuse,” Griffith said.
On Tuesday evening, CYF held a workshop at Golden Era hotel targeted towards empowering professionals on the island with different skills and strategies that are needed to help break the silence and the taboo pertaining to child abuse.
Griffith said the workshop was very successful, and she commended her colleague Lucienne Papa, the leader of the training workshop.
Papa said the training was to help attendees better recognise signs of child abuse. “In the workshop, together with attendees we worked to recognise the signs,” she said. Some attendees came with their own solutions, Papa added.
Many said the workshop was very informative and those in attendance asked the organisers for more training workshops to be held. CYF is making arrangements to see if more workshops can be organised in the future.
