“Is who kidnap One-Tété Lohkay” was the question asked by several people in the past months. The statue of the St. Maarten heroine was removed from its pedestal at the Cay Hill Roundabout earlier this year. Word is the statue was removed for repair after Hurricane Irma bent it forward. According to folklore, Lohkay, a young woman or perhaps a girl, was enslaved on a plantation here.
She rebelled and ran away from her “owners”, but was hunted, recaptured and brought back to the plantation. As punishment for her continued defiance and as a warning to other slaves, the plantation owner ordered that one of Lohkay’s breasts be cut off. That is how she became known as One-Tété Lohkay.
