PHILIPSBURG_-Caretaker Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunications (TEATT) Stuart Johnson on Monday morning announced that he will be contesting the January 9, 2020 snap parliamentary elections on the slate of the United Democrats (UD).

Johnson made the announcement at a press conference which he hosted jointly with UD leader Sarah Wescot-Williams at his cabinet.
Johnson started the press conference outlining all the positive strides that he and his ministry has made and that government on the whole has made since in office and indicated that he will be continuing the work that he began as a candidate on the slate of the UD. He stressed that he will “proudly” serve under Wescot-Williams’ leadership. He said for persons who felt that he left the United People’s (UP) party, he said it was the “UP party who left we the people of St. Maarten.”

The number on the slate under which Johnson would run was not released and no indication was given as to what the general UD slate would look like, as Wescot-Williams said discussions were still taking place. She however, indicated that the party is extremely proud of the group on its slate and noted that candidates will comprise a mix of persons from incumbents and new candidates to young candidates and those getting their feet wet for the first time.
