Stuart outlines objectives to TEATT civil servants | THE DAILY HERALD

POND ISLAND–Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transportation and Telecommunication (TEATT) Stuart Johnson recently outline his plans for the some 100 civil servants in his ministry, including the high priority of the Philipsburg revitalisation plan, community-based tourism and a sustainable agricultural policy targeting farming and fishing.

“Significant investments” in the road network are planned, and reduction of traffic jams. A public infrastructure development plan and policies on public transportation and infrastructure are in preparation.

Johnson disclosed that Sunwing Travel Group “will soon start construction of the 450-room five-star Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino” at the former Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort location.

The safety of casino controllers is on Johnson’s list; his father was a controller. Casino operators will be called to install double entrance doors similar to those at banks, and metal detectors.

Johnson is to work on increasing the “basic basket of goods” and on initiation of fair price control.

Among his strategic objectives are the reopening of Princess Juliana International Airport and finalising the United States pre-clearance here.

The possibilities of splitting the Department of Civil Aviation and Shipping and Maritime Affairs into two administrative bodies will be under review by the Ministry.

St. Maarten Tourist Bureau (STB) is to work closely with St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) to increase awareness through special joint promotions of the 50th year of Carnival in 2019.

Johnson said he wants to manage the parallel imports and the counterfeit market.
TEATT is to revisit and reinstate the Economic Development Cooperation.
With more investment coming in, the civil servants were told improved efficiency is needed to create a climate conducive to generating investor interest.
