Student dies in scooter accident

PHILIPSBURG–The Police Traffic Department and paramedics were sent to Rhine Road in Cupecoy on Thursday to investigate a traffic accident involving a scooter rider who was seriously injured.

Police spokesman Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson said on Friday that officers encountered a man of American nationality identified as J.V.H.P. who attended American University of the Caribbean (AUC) Medical School as a student.

He was treated on the scene by paramedics and then transported in very serious condition to St. Maarten Medical Center for further medical treatment.

The traffic officers determined that the victim was travelling at too a high speed when he rode over a “traffic bump,” at which point he lost control of his scooter and collided with a concrete wall.

At 8:50pm Police received the news that the victim had died at the Emergency Room due to the injuries he sustained during the accident.
