DAWN BEACH–The timeshare section of The Westin St. Maarten Dawn Beach Resort and Spa has reopened after the impact of the 2017 hurricanes, but word is still scarce on when or if ever the traditional hotel section will again welcome guests.
When queried by the press about the status of this shuttered branded property, Tourism and Economic Affairs Minister Stuart Johnson said he is due for a conference call with the resort’s principal in the coming days. His intention is to update the public about the “future plans” when these have been ascertained.
The planned construction of a Planet Hollywood resort by travel group Sunwing on the former Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort is progressing. Sunwing is working on its permits with the Ministry of Ministry of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure VROMI.
Johnson’s ministry is also finalising commitments the travel company needs to further its project.
As for the stalled Chinese government-based Pearl of China hotel and conference centre planned for Belair beach and Cay Hill, there is not much news. Asked about the project announced in September 2016, Johnson said, “The Pearl of China has been a long-winded discussion within government, within even the campaign trail, so that speaks for itself why there isn’t any Pearl as yet.”
