PHILIPSBURG–One of the persons who is being held in detention as a suspect in the “Amazoniet” case tried to commit suicide by hanging himself in the detention cells at the police station in Philipsburg on Saturday.
The police said in a statement that the Emergency Dispatch and the Watch Commander at the police headquarters in Philipsburg were notified by prison guards at approximately 12:00pm that a male suspect housed in the detention cells at the police station had attempted to commit suicide by hanging.
The guards on duty noticed the attempt on time and immediately took action, preventing the man from taking his life. He was attended to by paramedics who were called to the scene. The detainee did not suffer any physical injuries and was in good health, according to the police in a statement issued late Saturday afternoon.
Chief Prosecutor Mirjam Mol was notified of the incident. She contacted the head of the Pointe Blanche House of Detention, who reportedly said he would take all measures to protect the detainee and prevent him from hurting or endangering himself in the future.
The detainee, who was not identified, is one of three suspects held for involvement in the armed robbery of a Canadian tourist and his daughter in Beacon Hill on June 5.
Canadian national Sylvain Valade was shot during the robbery and later succumbed to his wounds at a hospital in the United States. His daughter was not physically injured, but was emotionally traumatised by the incident.
During Friday’s joint press conference of the police, the Prosecutor’s Office, Minister of Justice Cornelius de Weever and Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunication, Stuart Johnson, it was stated that the three suspects in the Amazoniet case were behind bars and were cooperating with the investigation. The suspects will remain in custody for questioning and further investigation, the police said.
