SZV to step up controls

PHILIPSBURG–Social and Health Insurances SZV will be intensifying its controls on businesses, in particular on construction sites, to ensure that workers are properly registered for insurance.

The social insurance service provider will also start a campaign as of Monday, April 9, to educate the community about how to go about registering workers for insurance.
SZV official Glen Carty told The Daily Herald that SZV will be monitoring construction sites very closely. “St. Maarten has shifted from a hospitality economy to a construction economy and we are going to start visiting every single construction site to make sure that the persons who are working there are registered at SZV,” Carty said.

He indicated that it is not SZV’s job to check whether workers are documented to work in the country because once a person is employed they should be registered at SZV. He said the insurance service provider will also “come down hard” on employers who deduct premiums from their workers’ salaries, but fail to turn this over to SZV. This is a common complaint from some workers.

SZV will start out with its intensive communication campaign to educate everyone on what needs to be done to register workers. “We will be going door to door. It will be an intense campaign and even the people who are employing contractors can be held accountable,” he said, adding that persons who bring in construction companies to the country to operate should ensure that they are adhering to the rules in the country.
