Team Kay retains crown in Junior Calypso competition

ST. EUSTATIUS–Three young artistes vied for the crown in Thursday’s Junior Calypso competition. In the competition, dubbed Battle of the Future number three, reigning Calypso champion Team Kay was able to retain her crown. The judges for the competition were Helen Hart of Dutch St. Maarten, Dennis Richards of St. Kitts and Andrew Baker, Jr. Richardson of French St. Martin.   The contestants were awarded points for: best introduction, best costume, best song, and best stage performance. They also had to answer a question about St. Eustatius. After the scores were tallied, Junior Calypso Team Kay won with 367 points. She received $2,000, $1,500 of which came from the show’s promoters and $500 from St. Eustatius Telecom Company EUTEL NV. Team Kay also received a laptop, a gift basket, and a back pack with back-to-school supplies.

  Second place went to Bomba with 330 points. He received a $50-Duggins gift basket, a tablet, school supplies, and a school bag.

  Third place went to Master Blaster with 288 points. He was awarded $50, a cell phone, a school bag, a tablet, and a gift basket.

  During the awards section of the competition, one contestant, who was performing for the first time, became emotional, but Team Kay came over and consoled him.

  There were various performances during the show. Roxy from Anguilla, who was one of the favourites of the children. The Junior Calypso King from Nevis also sang his song “One People.”
