PHILIPSBURG–The Inspectorate of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunications (TEATT) will consider the concerns of driving instructors and exam candidates regarding the new digital examination system.

This information was communicated to the St. Maarten Consumers Coalition during a second meeting with the TEATT Inspectorate held recently.

Coalition representative Raymond Jessurun said at a press conference on Thursday that the Coalition informed the Inspectorate about its meeting with driving instructors as well as the concerns of exam candidates, who said they were not prepared sufficiently to sit the theoretical exam in a digitized way.

“Based on the concerns of the driving instructors about the quality of the examination system questions and answers, we requested the Inspectorate to extend the soft launch of the examination system and to address the concerns of the students and the driving instructors about the quality of the examination questions and answers,” Jessurun said.

“The Inspectorate is looking forward to meeting with a committee of driving instructors on their concerns and observations. The students, will, in the meanwhile, be provided with a choice to pass their theoretical exam the old way or via the new digitized way. Students who passed their exam this week informed us that they were given the option to choose which examination system they preferred.”

Jessurun said the Inspectorate encourages the students to do a test exam to become familiarized with the new examination system for free. “This is also being implemented in Aruba where they also are introducing a digitized driving license examination system. The Inspectorate would like to get the experience of students with the new examination system to discuss those with the system developer and to improve the system. Based on our suggestion the Inspectorate is also willing to consider an expert opinion on the methodology aspect of the developed driving license examination system.”

“We agreed with the Inspectorate to continue our meetings to look for feedback and solutions at the table and not via the news media. As Consumers Coalition though, we maintain our right to inform the public of the progress in the dialogue with the Inspectorate of TEATT. We are looking forward to our next meeting with the Inspectorate of TEATT on the way forward and the processing of the concerns and recommendations of the students and the driving instructors.”
