TelEm informs workers about Cable TV closure

PHILIPSBURG–While St. Maarten Communications Union (SMCU) is not happy with TelEm’s decision to not re-open the St. Maarten Cable TV office in Madame Estate, the union says the company has now officially informed its workers about the closure of the company.

SMCU President Ludson Evers said on Tuesday the workers officially received information about the closure from management earlier this week. He said there is not much that the union can do if a company chooses to close its doors as TelEm did with the Cable TV office last week. He said as long as the company follows the correct procedures, the union would not have an issue.

In its correspondence to workers, TelEm informed them about the closure and indicated that the manpower assessment will be done. The union was also updated on the process. Management also informed Evers that a presentation will be done on the manpower assessment so that the union can be involved. Workers will also continue to receive their salaries until the completion of the assessment. “Management is now adhering to what they have to do,” Evers said.

TelEm closed the Cable TV office on January 2. The union subsequently asked the company to re-open the office for the technical division and customer service to continue to service customers at the re-opened office. However, after assessing SMCU’s proposal, the TelEm Group said it would not be able to re-open the Cable TV office as this company no longer exists and if re-opened, all workers would fall under the TelEm Group.
