Union members in discussion at the meeting
PHILIPSBURG–The unions representing police and Immigration workers held an urgent meeting with their membership at the Windward Islands Civil Servants Union/Private Sector Union (WICSU/PSU) office on Walter Nisbeth Road (Pondfill) on Thursday, November 7.
The meeting was called to update members on a meeting held with caretaker Minster of Justice Perry Geerlings on Wednesday.
The meeting had a large turnout with members from both the Police Force and Immigration Department present. WICSU/PSU President Rogerrel Mauricia addressed the members and provided those in attendance with results of the meeting with Geerlings.
Tempers flared during the meeting as members voiced their concerns and frustrations with the current progress of receiving their retroactive payments. Many members stated that the St. Maarten Police Force KPSM has faced injustice and ultimately has been left on the “backburner” for far too long.
Geerlings made an appearance at the meeting and addressed those in attendance. He reassured union members that funds expected from the sale of United Telecommunications Services (UTS) shares are earmarked for the retroactive payments for KPSM, but said that proper protocol must be followed before this can be achieved.
Union members had the opportunity to pose questions directly to Geerlings and expressed their disappointment in the lack of priority given to the issue.
The Daily Herald reached out to Mauricia for a statement, but had not received a response up to press time.
