PHILIPSBURG–A total of ten political parties are now registered with the Electoral Council and are eligible to continue the process to contest the January 9, 2020, snap parliamentary election.
Electoral Council Chairperson Bert Hofman told The Daily Herald that there are now 10 political parties registered. One of those registered is the new Party For Progress (PFP), whose requests for registration of the party and for registration of PFP as the reference that shall be placed above the list of candidates to be submitted by the party have been accepted.
Hofman said a second new party, St. Maarten Action Movement (SAM), had cancelled its registration. SAM would have been the 11th party had it not cancelled its registration.
The references of three parties – St. Maarten Democratic Party, United People’s Party Association and The Concordia Political Alliance Association – were recently registered or reregistered with the Electoral Council and the parties will also be able to continue the process to contest the election.
Six parties were already registered with the Electoral Council: National Alliance (NA), United St. Maarten Party (US Party); Sint Maarten Christian Party (SMCP), People’s Progressive Alliance Association (PPA); St. Maarten Development Movement (SDM) and The United Democrats (UD).
All the parties contesting the election are expected to submit their lists of candidates on Nomination Day, which is set for Thursday, November 21. Election Day will be January 9, 2020, and the dissolution of Parliament and convening of the new parliament on February 10, 2020
