Ten qualify for NAGICO Calypso Finals April 26

Kaiso Brat was the top qualifier in Monday night’s Calypso eliminations.

PHILIPSBURG–Seventeen calypso singers performed their hearts out and did not disappoint the audience in the annual NAGICO Senior Calypso Eliminations in Carnival Village on Monday evening.

The singers had no limits as they touched all aspects of social commentary with their take on the island’s political situation. Hurricane Irma was mentioned in almost every song performed and the attendees loved every moment of the performances.

Kaiso Brat came out as the top qualifier with his song “Drones,” followed by King Beau Beau – “Jam Dem,” X-Rey, Mighty Dow, Baker Jr, Protege, Repeater, Ebony Empress – “We are the survivors,” Genius and, rounding off the top 10, The Wizard.

Those 10 finalists will go up against five-time Calypso Monarch Fish Da Mega Boss in the finals. One of the biggest upsets of the evening was Mighty Pepper and Chipman not advancing to the finals. The crowd hopes to see these two performers as guest acts for the final show.

The calypso competition was organised by a new group of calypso enthusiasts. Rolando Tobias and Marvin “King Stunky” Dollison of the hit radio programme Caribbean Classics will organise the show along with calypso lovers Claudius “Toontje” Buncamper and Cheryl Arnell. The new organisers coordinated the event under the auspices of St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF).
