SIMPSON BAY–Numerous complaints from timeshare owners about the noise nuisance from many roadside establishments that have mushroomed around the country have led
St. Maarten Timeshare Association to call on the Justice Minister to enforce the noise level regulations.
“These establishments are considered to be a nuisance by the guests and property owners, as there is a lack of control when they play loud music for their patrons. This is evidently disturbing to residents and guests alike and has been highlighted on several occasions on social media as being unbearable and unhealthy, especially for those with young kids and older adults,” said SMTA in a press statement.
SMTA said it understands that entertainment increases the traffic and attraction to an establishment, but it should be done in a way that takes the surrounding environment into consideration.
“On any given night there are annoyances of multiple vendors blaring loud music simultaneously, patrons walking on the road causing traffic jams and traffic noises. As a result, it creates quite a commotion and discomfort to those in the neighbourhoods,” said SMTA.
In certain areas, the disturbance can last until late at night and into the early hours of the morning, said SMTA. “Unhappy guests complain, write reviews or simply do not return and influence others not to visit the island too.
“As corporate citizens, who are concerned about the tourism product, we wish to bring the following to the attention of the relevant authorities who can take the necessary actions to regulate this disturbance. We have so much to gain if we do, and so much to lose if we don’t,” said the association.
