COLE BAY–Topper’s Rhum Distillery has been nominated for Best Caribbean Rum Distillery in USA TODAY’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice travel award contest.

“It is a great honour to be a contender in this prestigious competition amongst some of the most famous rum brands in the world such as Bacardi, Angostura, Brugal, Cruzan, Mount Gay, Appleton Estate and Barbancourt,” Topper’s said in a press release on Wednesday.

USA Today’s 10Best.com provides travellers with original, unbiased and experiential travel content of top attractions, things to see and do, and restaurants in top destinations in the United States of America (USA) and around the world. No business pays to be listed.

At its core is the team of local travel experts: a well-travelled and well-educated group who are not only experts in their fields, but also discriminating in their tastes, it was stated in the release.

Topper’s Rhum, a locally made product, is a world-class premium rhum that is handmade, bottled and packaged in Cole Bay, St. Maarten. Topper’s Rhum uses

only all-natural premium ingredients and no preservatives. The company said it is very environmentally conscientious and well known for its signature reusable swing-top bottles.

This official St. Maarten rhum is the only spirit distilled and exported from St. Maarten. The company currently exports to six countries and more than 21 states in the USA and is the official rhum of the Dutch Army. By constantly expanding overseas, it is also notably promoting St. Maarten internationally. In addition, the products are sold online to almost anywhere in the world.

Topper’s Rhum has been awarded 24 medals given by the most prestigious rum-tasting contests in the world.

Topper’s Rhum Distillery is one of the top unique places to visit in St. Maarten, according to the St. Maarten Tourism Bureau. It is open from 9:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday and 9:00am to 12:00pm on Saturdays for rhum-tasting and shopping. Tours are available at 10:00am and 4:00pm Monday to Saturday by calling tel. 520-0008 or booking online at

It also gives regular tours to cruise ship passengers. The hands-on tour is 90 minutes. A guide takes guests through the 6,000-sqare-foot distillery where guests will learn a little history of rum-making and get a behind-the-scenes look at how it is fermented, distilled, blended and bottled. At the tasting bar guests can try some of the 50 unique flavours that are in development and enjoy unlimited samples of all of its artisanal products as well as its famous rhum cake.

The 10Best contest, which is being promoted by USA Today, gives voters four weeks to vote for the candidate of their choice. A person can vote once a day for the run of the contest. Voting ends on Monday, February 5, at 11:59am and the winners will be announced on 10Best on Friday, February 9, at 12:00pm, then later in USA Today.
